True lilies, formally known as Liliums, typically finish their blooming cycle in August or September. While these resilient plants feature striking, large-petaled flowers, their post-bloom phase leaves many gardeners unsure of the next steps.

Managing lilies during this transition is crucial for future growth. The process requires minimal effort, provided you time your actions correctly.
Patience Over Pruning
The biggest mistake you can make is cutting the plant down too early. Gardeners should start by lightly removing only the spent flowers.
“Once lilies have finished flowering, don’t be too quick to tidy everything away,” says Julian Palphramand, head of plants at British Garden Centres.

He advises leaving the stems and green foliage intact. This allows the plant to continue feeding the bulb and storing energy for the following year’s display.
Wait until late autumn to do any serious cutting. Once the leaves and stems turn completely yellow or brown, the energy transfer is complete.

At this point, you can safely cut the dead stalk back to about 2.5 cm above the soil level.
“Once the leaves have yellowed and the stems have died back naturally, you can cut them down neatly,” Palphramand adds. “It’s a simple bit of follow-through, but it really helps lilies come back in fine form.”
Maintain Soil Moisture
While the plant winds down, it still requires active hydration. Watering should continue as long as the greenery remains alive.
“Keep the soil lightly moist while the plant is still active,” Palphramand notes. “Make sure drainage is sharp and avoid letting bulbs sit in wet compost, especially in pots.”
Feed for the Future

Late summer is the ideal window to apply a nutrient-rich fertilizer. This final feeding equips the plant for its dormant winter phase.
“If you want to give them an extra boost, a light feed can help strengthen the bulb before it goes dormant,” Palphramand advises.
Combining these three steps—strategic deadheading, consistent moisture, and a timely fertilizer application—guarantees a robust display next season.
